And if you run the numbers the actually cost to residents is closer to $700 per year or $60 per month. Property owners will surely pass this on to their renters as well. Good luck. - Resident

Everyone talks about 10 million. What about the fact that interest on a 10 million dollar bond will actually cost closer to 22 million with interest. If you follow this issue you'll also read that the bond is figured on today's low interest rates and that realistically the interest rate will climb to 12%

and to Alvin--of the 35+ men and women on Ben Lomond Fire, over one third of them are trained parmamedics. Those who are not full time fire-medics at other stations usually work for firms such as AMR and Westmed. - michelle

You probably spend more than that on your frilly little lattes so why is it preventing so many from giving this community what it really needs? This measure sounds like a lot, yes, but 10 million over thirty years isn't if I had to guess, its likely that you won't even be living here in thirty years! and if you do, its even more likely that you will dial those three little numbers (better known as 9-1-1) at least once in that time. And if you do and those guys cant get thier trucks out of the engine bays (that are too small) you're gonna start wishin they had that new station, new doors, and heck, maybe even a place to park thier TRUCKS!! AND new station or not, Henfling's could still be there in thirty years, as stated above Ben Lomond Fire Department is in no position to push owners out and the building down for parking. So keep your pants on and go ask Christine for a drink, and again..get your facts straight before you start complaining about what you ASSUME is going to happen. - michelle

As another Ben Lomond resident, Henfling's patron, and Measure S supporter, At end of the current lease for Hendfling's there is a clause for a lease extention if the current lease holder wants it. It's hard to run a little bar and make any money, and I do know that the owners must put there own bucks back into the bar to make ends meet. The fire cheif has said his name will not be connected to the closing of Henfling's - Luca

Too much money. No on this one, then come back with a proposal more in line with reality. I would support a rational measure, this one is not. - Andrea Sanchez

... when either the lease is up in two years or worst, when their license expires in June of this year. The fact that Chief Charcho has said as much as they would like to demolish the tavern and pave the lot over (for what a few parking spaces?).

What do others think about Measure S?

Right now, property taxes are damn high with the economy going to the dump. $10M does seem a awful lot for a fancy building which will look a hell lot better than Felton's useful firehouse. - Ace Noname

As a Ben Lomond resident, Henfling's patron, and Measure S supporter, I think there are lots of residents who are anxious to make assumptions about the fate of Henfling's Tavern and Measure S in general. The facts are these: Ben Lomond Fire Protection District did purchase Henfling's,they on it! However, they do NOT have plans to close it anytime soon and it has nothing to do with the passing of Measure S. If the measure passes and the new station is built (which could take an additional 5 years) Henfling's could be removed to make room for parking but, there are no current plans to close or demolish the tavern anytime soon. Just as the Ben Lomond residents love the bar, so do the firefighters, they don't want it to go just as much as we don't. So before you go bad-mouthing Ben Lomond Fire District for purchasing the property *ACE* why dont you get your facts straight!!

Those men and women do a job that most could only dream of doing. They risk their lives every day to save the lives and homes of others. Thy deserve a new station, a new training facility, and this town deserves a fully-functioning fire house/community center/and overall incident command in the case of a major town emergency. As a Ben Lomond resident, I feel that its a small price to pay for the benefits it will provide. - michelle

Is the fire station bond issue really going to be 10 million dollars? In suburban communities, fire stations are often converted large homes on the edge of a neighborhood. Even if you bought two adjacent homes, combined the parcels, and connected the houses with a new engine structure/garage, that would probably cost less than 2 or 3 million dollars. How much did the Zayante fire station cost?

On a different but allied subject, I know everyone likes to defend their own turf, but would it be more efficient to now merge the local SLV fire departments into a larger department or district, with more full time fire fighters, and perhaps some paramedics? - Alvin Vanne

So the land is being bought for the new firehouse. So what will happen to Henfling's? My guess is that it will be condemned and torn down. Why does the fire house need extra parking? And is the sacrifice of a SLV landmark for the fire boyz to park their SUVs and pickups really necessary?

Inquiring minds would like to know. - Ace Noname
