Both Dans are right

That’s right, scientific data, but data and solutions based on fact, not emotion and a NIMBY (not in my backyard) attitude. If we can build the world trade center and now the freedom tower within a river, I think we can build a little housing within a small empty lot that my or my not be “wet”. This is not acres of wetland filled with rare birds and wildlife that inspire awe. This is an empty lot within a commercial area, filled with weeds and transients. Come on, this claim of we can’t built it because it’s too environmentally sensitive BS is from the old hippies that think they rule the mountains. Time to wake up and build this project in Felton it will add positively to our infrastructure. Come on ya old hippie, put on your Birkenstocks, put down the bong, go outside, and get rid of the old VW in the yard that has been leaking oil for the last decade. Then you can truly say you made a difference in our environment. - SLV Resident

It boggles the mind how the developer and all 3 of their community supporters continue to spread lies about the project and infrastructure. Thank you Stephen for taking the time to correct that misinformation.

The ONLY way to resolve this issue is with scientific environmental data. - Ben

...Behind the shopping center.....

That bunch of tanks and filters sitting behind a fence in the northeast corner of the shopping center is the so-called enhanced treatment system that was installed in an attempt to help make the drainfields function better.

The trouble is, the drainfields are located in soils with very fine pores. Once the normal rainfall returns, there is not enough pore space remaining in the soil to absorb and transmit wastewater. Then another drainfield failure may occur. I do not wish the shopping center failure, I am merely stating that based on history, the system will continue to have failures during normal winter and spring rainy seasons. - Stephen D.
It's you and YOUR team that throw the personal attacks. A public records request with the county shows just exactly what you and your ilk are capable of. And it ain't pretty. - mya

.....AND.......

By the way, the failure of a home sewage disposal system of adequate size and on a site with favorable soil conditions is relatively infrequent, perhaps once in 15 years or even less. To purposely propose an undersized sewage disposal system on a site with unfavorable soil and groundwater conditions, then increase the sewage flow to 55 times greater than that of one individual home, and to ignore that sewage system failures are likely multiple times during every normal or above normal winter, THAT is the height of environmental irresponsibility. - Stephen D.
My experience since 1973...

I have worked with the sewage disposal problems of the Felton Faire shopping center as both a consultant and and a county registered environmental health specialist. I have reviewed the soil test reports from both sites.

It is my opinion, based on experience and reviews, that the location of the shopping center on its site was a 1971 land use and environmental health mistake. It is my opinion that regardless of the level of treatment that the sewage receives before disposal, that problems are likely to continue in years of normal and above normal rainfall.

It is also my opinion that the soil and ground water conditions on the SCH site are much worse than on the shopping center site, not to mention that the proposed drainfield is way under-sized and it is much too close (by ordinance) to the proposed detention pond. There are many other reasons why on site sewage disposal for 55 units stuck on less than half of a 14.8 acre site is ridiculous, but I will not belabor the point here. The entire plan is a mistake, due to the lack of infrastructure to handle the sewage disposal needs and storm water/flood control discharges. With sane politicians in charge, this should be the end of the story. I am sorry to say it is not. - Stephen D. Homan

Dan, you might want to talk to your neighbors or read the Valley Post. A dozen of them wrote a powerful letter claiming the exact opposite of your editorial. That raises a strong question about your intent and accuracy of your statements. You wouldn't have anything to do with SCH or the Housing Element would you? - constituent

Dan is wrong, system failed in 2006 right after new system installed

Dan - July 1, 2006 overflow, failed pump mechanism, raw sewage flowing. But in answer to your sarcastic question - sure you should be able to build a new home....just not 55 of them where the county has determined that 1 septic permit per acre is crucial to enforce. - Andrea Sanchez
