Then you haven't been reading Bob's writings for very long. Please elaborate on how you think public safety retirements for officers who have a life expectancy of 57 are part of the problem. - Steven Smith

Bob,

You've been making your obtuse and cynical comparisons between government employment and private employment for years.

Sure, private employers don't have retirement benefits similar to PERS. But, what you don't talk about is that PERS invests its funds in the US (and California's) economy and businesses. What private businesses do offer their employees that government can't match are benefits like profit sharing, stock options, and other financial considerations.

Another thing you don't talk about when criticizing "single highest year" and the retirement benefits for peace officers is that their life expectancy after retirement is only 7 years. So, don't worry Bob, you wont have to pay those benefits for very long. After 30 years or so of being shot at, punched, spat upon, kicked, and metaphorically s**t on by ungrateful jerks like you is a very short life expectancy.

The State also has a program of providing cost free tuition to academically qualified children of peace officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. Do you think thats unfair to?

When all the brokers, bankers, and businesspeople were fleeing the World Trade Center I would remind you that several hundred public safety officers were running in to save those left behind. What do you think their retirement compensation should be?

There is no doubt Bob that there are over-compensated people in government employment just as there are in private industry. What do you think of the bailout Bob? Sounds like 700 billion to bail out a bunch of private bankers who should have known better. And you think government is the problem?
