With more than 70 athletes on the Scotts Valley track team and a dedicated coaching staff, the Falcons are in the upper echelon of league-title contenders for the first time in their nine-year history.

“I’m very excited going into the league finals,” said head coach Orion Latin. “We seem to be peaking at the right time.”

Led by a boys 4x400-meter relay team that has run a circuit in three minutes, 29 seconds, as well as a pair of shot-putters, Sean Woolery and Taylor Pascal, who lengthen their throws almost every meet, the Falcons are worth keeping their eye on.

The girls team is led by pole vaulter Cleary Wunder and sophomore long jumper Brittany Kuo, who will likely both qualify for the Central Coast Championship meet.

The final league dual meet was Thursday, April 24 (scores not available at press time), and the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League trials are Thursday, May 1, at San Lorenzo Valley High.

The finals will be Saturday, May 3, also at SLV.

At the Central Coast Section “Top Eight” meet, Scotts Valley had a strong showing. Junior Steven Haas ran a 51.75 second-race in the 400 meters and posted a 23.64 in the 200 meters; Patrick Desmond ran 2:08.76 in the 800; the boys 4x400 relay team ran 3:32.81; Michael Benko cleared 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault; Ryan Estrada ran 11.73 in the frosh/soph 100 and jumped 18-10½ in the long jump; Wunder cleared 10-6 for third in the pole vault; and Kuo long-jumped 15-9 for fourth in the event.
