Santiago Ortega, a rural carrier associate at the Boulder Creek Post Office, has been charged in Santa Cruz County Superior Court with felony mail theft and embezzlement.
District Attorney Bob Lee said that between November 2006 and October 2007, Ortega stole jewelry, rare coins, figurines, art, appliances and other valuable items from customers.
Postal investigators discovered the thefts after customers complained that they were not getting their insured packages. The loss to local victims is estimated in thousands of dollars.
Investigators recovered 30 boxes containing jewelry and are working to get the jewelry items to their rightful owners.
