School officials and the county Health Services Agency are warning of possible exposure to mononucleosis and chicken pox at area schools.

At San Lorenzo Valley High School, parents were cautioned this week to seek medical treatment if their children develop mono symptoms, such as fever, sore throat, headache, swollen neck glands, fatigue and loss of appetite.

Scotts Valley parents were warned about a small outbreak of chicken pox, which can be dangerous in some patients. Even vaccinated children can develop a mild case, health officials said.

Symptoms start with a mild fever and malaise, followed by an itchy, blistery rash. The disease is contagious from before the rash appears until the blisters crust over, so affected students should be kept home as soon as the first symptoms appear.
