Twenty-two-year-old Lompico resident Rita Kraft died at the county jail early in the morning Tuesday, May 6.
Officers entered Kraft’s locked cell, which she shared with another woman, during a routine safety check and found her unresponsive.
Medical personnel could not revive Kraft, who was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m.
The cause of death will be determined by a medical examination. There were no signs of trauma, and investigators do not suspect foul play.
“It’s really just a tragic end to a tragic life,” said court-appointed attorney Sarah McCarthy. “She was genuine, in spite of all this. She was a kind and caring person. It’s very tragic.”
Kraft was jailed after she admitted to tossing her 18-month-old son, Connor, off a Lompico balcony last October. The boy was resuscitated by a neighbor and airlifted to Stanford University Medical Center.
Connor is with his father, McCarthy said.
Kraft has a family history of depression, McCarthy said, and investigators determined that she was suffering from post-partum depression when she was arrested.
The case had not gone to trial because of an extensive investigation into Kraft’s family history and mental health, McCarthy said.
