Sheriff’s deputies arrested a dozen people in a narcotics bust along Highway 9 on Thursday, May 1.
Based on information from citizens and interviews with previous arrestees, deputies figured out that a group of drug traffickers were selling primarily heroin and cocaine in several places.
Deputies conducted the four-hour operation at Rincon Park in the southern part of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, along the railroad tracks near Pogonip Park in Santa Cruz and near the Paradise Park community outside Santa Cruz.
“Based upon initial investigations, large amounts of these drugs were being sold and drug users from throughout the county were traveling to this location to obtain narcotics,” Chief Deputy Terry Parker said.
The areas are all mountainous and offer seclusion and easy routes of escape for dealers. The dealers also used lookouts to warn them when law enforcement was in the area, allowing them to escape into the mountains.
Eleven of the 12 arrested have histories of previous arrests and eight are already on probation or state parole.
One of the suspected dealers, Pedro Escobar, was arrested with 17 grams of heroin and seven grams of cocaine packaged for sale. He also had about $700 cash.
