Practice nearly made perfect for Scotts Valley’s Jon Baldwin in the third and final round of the annual Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup at the DeLaveaga disc golf course in Santa Cruz on Sunday, May 4.

Baldwin, who plays the DeLaveaga course about four times a week, recorded the second-lowest score of the day, a 10-under-par 62, to move into sole possession of 10th place in the competitive Open Division. That qualified him for the prestigious U.S. Open Championship and earned him a healthy $445 paycheck.

He recorded a three-round total of 220.

“I really wanted to qualify for the U.S. Open, and I knew I had to shoot a pretty good score,” Baldwin said.

The only player to have a better third round — and that only by one shot — was tournament winner Steve Rico, who shot an 11-under par final round for a three-round total of 212.

Four out of the five top players in the world played in the three-day event, including 12-time national champion Ken Climo, who was in Baldwin’s foursome on the second day.

Baldwin was not the only local to play in what is considered one of the top disc golf tournaments in the nation.

Brookdale’s Donald Smith bounced back from a 5-over-par second round to shoot a 5-under 67 on the final day and claim a two-way tie for 26th and a $190 paycheck.

Jamie Tuckey, a Scotts Valley High School teacher, finished in 55th with a 248, and Scotts Valley’s Tim Messer scored a 254.

In the Masters Division (40- to 50-year-olds), Scotts Valley’s Jim Hagen was fourth, shooting an even 234 over 78 holes. Hagen took home $555. Felton resident Jack Trageser battled to a 7-over-par 241, good for 13th in the masters division and $193.

Competitors play the entire 27-hole course the first two days of the tournament and 24 holes on the final day.
