The San Lorenzo Valley High golf team had a surprising season, finished off with a respectable showing at the league championships and an All-League pick for its top golfer.

Junior Scott Abel shot an 18-hole total of 96 on a blustery day at Pasatiempo Golf Club on April 29, good for 13th place in league. Teammate Sean Conner finished with a 104 on the day, and two other players shot under 80.

Abel has been golfing for about two years. He quit playing basketball and focused on golf at the urging of his father.

“My dad got me started for anger management, because you have to deal with stress,” Abel said.

Conner, a Cougars football player who chops and delivers firewood during the golf season, agreed that the stress level is real.

“One day, you go out and do really well, and the next day, you really suck,” he said.

Conner, who rarely uses his driver, tries to avoid swinging harder when he gets angry — sometimes a tough proposition, but one he has to focus on.

Abel garnered All-League honors for the first time this season, leading the Cougars to a 3-8 record in league, including two wins over neighboring Scotts Valley.

“It’s been a lot of fun, and I think we have an advantage playing Boulder Creek,” Abel said. “It’s really tight and small.”

Next year’s team will return a solid group of freshmen and sophomores, and Abel has high hopes.

“The biggest thing is for our players to play in the off-season,” he said.

Scotts Valley High’s senior duo of Kyle Thompson and David Bucci garnered post-season honors as well.

Thompson, who finished eighth in the league finals with an 89, was the Falcons’ low scorer this season.

He earned an All-League selection for the second year in a row.
