A letter to the editor from Tom Scully in Santa Cruz
EDITOR,
I was saddened to read the article in the May 2 edition titled “County fire crews hampered by reduced engine staffing.” The report did not mention even once the many volunteer firefighters that make up the majority of the County Fire Department’s staffing. They were there at the Bonny Doon vegetation fire and, I am sure, at the Summit Road fire as well. They worked long and hard to control the fires with the assistance of Cal Fire.
County Fire is contracted to Cal Fire and they do an admirable job of helping protect us, but it is the Volunteer Firefighters that do the bulk of the work and respond first, especially in Bonny Doon. You did a disservice to our volunteers by not even mentioning their daily contribution to our fire and life safety.
Tom Scully, Santa Cruz
