A letter to the editor from Elizabeth Walch in Scotts Valley

EDITOR,

If you have not had the chance to see the drawings of the proposed City Center featuring a beautiful new Scotts Valley Library, take a minute to stop by our existing library and take a look. We have the opportunity to make a powerful statement about our community by encouraging and supporting literacy.

On June 3, we also have an opportunity to make a statement about our values as we vote “yes” on Measure R. This important measure is not a new tax. It is merely a continuation of the quarter-cent sales tax that is already in place and funds 51 percent of our library expenses. The loss of this revenue would devastate our libraries and their services throughout Santa Cruz County. This is our opportunity to sustain our libraries without increasing taxes.

Sixty percent of county residents have visited a library in the past year. More than 100,000 people have active library cards. Even in this Internet age, there are more community members visiting libraries than ever before. Our libraries and their programs serve diverse groups including seniors, child care centers, English-language learners, and young people of all ages. With the lack of funding and sufficient libraries in all of our schools, our public library is more important than ever. Please support this important part of our community by voting “yes” on Measure R.
