In addition to thank-you signs dotting many driveways after the Martin Fire, these expressions of support were received by the Press-Banner
Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-Banner After the ash settled, Cal Fire officials still had not determined how the Martin Fire in Bonny Doon started as of Wednesday, June 25.
There was plenty of appreciation, however, for the firefighters who waged an all-out battle to tame the county’s second big wildfire of the season, controlled June 17 at 520 acres.
In addition to thank-you signs dotting many driveways, these expressions of support were received by the Press-Banner:
To firefighters from members of Bonny Doon Presbyterian Church:
Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-Banner We at Bonny Doon Presbyterian Church would like to thank the Bonny Doon Volunteer Fire Department, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and all firefighting departments and emergency-response teams who contributed personnel, equipment, resources and expertise to fighting the Martin Road fire.
You fought hard.
You fought well.
You fought to the end.
Thank you also to the many local churches and community members who called and offered assistance to the Bonny Doon community during and after the fire.
Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-Banner Our hearts are filled with gratitude to each of you.
To firefighters from Heidi Harris of Ben Lomond
On behalf of all the residents in the San Lorenzo Valley and Bonny Doon, I want to express our sincere appreciation to all the wonderful firefighters who came to the aid of all of us here during a terrifying time. I have lived here in the valley for my entire life, and this was the closest to a fire of this magnitude I have ever experienced.
The feeling of powerlessness was overwhelming, and the underlying fear of “what-if” was unnerving. The firefighters worked bravely, diligently and intelligently to mitigate the destruction of this horrific fire, and the residents of SLV and BD are truly grateful. They are our heroes! Thank you!
Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-Banner To residents from Cal Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit and Incident Command Team 8
The men and women of Cal Fire would like to take this opportunity to thank the communities that were affected by the recent Martin Fire for their outpouring support and patience. It is not easy to be evacuated from your home and to have your daily routine upended by a devastating event such as a wildland fire.
Cal Fire’s foremost goal is to protect life, then property, and finally the natural resources. In a fast-moving fire like this one, time is of the essence, not only in the response of emergency services but your response to the requests from those fighting to protect your homes and save your communities.
Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-Banner The residents and businesses in the areas surrounding the fire have taken every opportunity to show their support for the men and women who fought the fire, controlled the traffic flow and patrolled the streets to protect the empty homes. For the many thank-you signs that appeared along the roadside, for the home-baked goods brought personally to the incident base, for the support from businesses such as Coca-Cola, the Ice Cream Lady, the employees of Safeway and many others, we deeply appreciate your support.

Finally, as we have seen with the Summit Fire and now the Martin Fire, this area is primed for wildland fire. If you have not yet done so, please complete the 100 feet of defensible space around your home. And, once again, for all the support provided to the men and women who fought the Martin Fire — thank you!
It is the Press-Banner’s policy not to publish routine thank-you letters because so many good works take place that we wouldn’t have space for thank-yous about all of them. The Martin Fire in Bonny Doon, however, was far from routine, so we make an exception for these submissions.
