In the closest game yet for either team, Scotts Valley’s 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars defeated San Lorenzo Valley, 3-1, on Tuesday, July 8, to move on in the winners bracket, handing SLV its first loss.

Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-Banner Alex Waggoner pitched effectively for Scotts Valley (3-0), while Alex Pruneau and Willie Johnston backed him up, each hitting a home run.
Waggoner struck out 10 and allowed eight hits, but SLV (2-1) had a chance in the sixth with runners on and nobody out.
But Waggoner struck out two batters before reaching his pitch limit, and Tyler Bisel came in for the save.
SLV pitcher Billy Mullins tossed a three-hitter and struck out 11 in a courageous performance. He was struck in the right shoulder by a line drive off the bat of Waggoner, but after lying on the ground in pain for a time, he remained in the game.
SLV played Gilroy on Wednesday, July 9, and Scotts Valley faced Aptos on Thursday, July 10, in the double-elimination tournament. Results of those games were not available at press time.
July 2: Scotts Valley 12, Live Oak 0
In a game called after four innings on the mercy rule, Waggoner struck out eight Live Oak batters while allowing two hits and three walks.
Bisel got things going for Scotts Valley in the first inning with a three-run bomb. That was followed by a two-run homer by Pruneau in the third inning. Austin Froid went 2-for-2, Bubba Rogers went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and Johnston went
2-for-3 with a double.
July 5: Scotts Valley 9, Capitola/Soquel 2
Froid pitched six complete innings, striking out nine and allowing no earned runs on two hits.
Pruneau blasted his second homer of the tournament, Johnston went 3-for-4, Rogers went 2-for-3 and Isiah Alvarez went 2-for-4.
July 3: SLV 10, Watsonville National/Salsipuedes 0
The SLV 12-year-old All-Stars, led by Johnny Lucas’ no-hitter on the mound, defeated Watsonville National/Salsipuedes on July 3 at Harvey West Park.
In another complete-game shutout in the post-season, Lucas might have outdone
all the rest with a 62-pitch effort in a game shortened by an inning on the 10-run mercy rule.
Lucas faced 15 batters,
striking out 12.
Ajay Morrison in right field made two diving catches to preserve the no-no.
Meanwhile, SLV battered the Watsonville pitchers. The team’s hitters racked up 10 hits and drew four walks.
Jordan Peabody led off the bottom of the first with a double before scoring on a passed ball for the first run of the game. Ryan Olmsted mashed two doubles, scored twice and had one RBI, and Mullins launched a two-run homer for SLV. Jake Schwarz also had a two-run single.
