A letter to the editor from Tina Patrick in Boulder Creek
EDITOR,
I have to laugh good-humoredly a bit when I read that one of the reasons Scotts Valley residents don’t want a Target is it will tarnish their "image" as one enters the city off Highway 17. One resident wrote the Press Banner with a letter saying that the resident didn’t want to compromise Scotts Valley’s natural beauty that she enjoys so much after leaving San Jose. Now, I don’t know how to say this without sounding rude but, "What natural beauty?" Scotts Valley Boulevard, for example, seems to have more auto body shops per capita than I’ve ever seen anywhere, a couple of big RV sale lots and some other buildings that I don’t know what’s inside of them. I won’t even mention that huge brown field right in the middle of town behind the propane tank place. (Someday a town center?)
I’ve always felt that Scotts Valley was still growing her soul (albeit slowly).
These are the reasons I go to Scotts Valley: the Highway 17 on-ramp, Kmart (rarely), Payless Shoe Source, Ivy’s Porch, Skypark and the movie theater. When I want natural beauty, I walk the redwoods or go to the coastline or half a dozen other places. Scotts Valley doesn’t come to mind for natural beauty.
Scotts Valley, you know it’s true: Target is so you! Embrace it! Now, if you added a Trader Joe’s and something other than a fast-food joint and some surrounding parkland next to the Target, you’d be golden — and while you’re at it, bring back Santa’s Village. Now there was a reason to go to Scotts Valley!
