The pornography trial of San Jose police officer Kenneth Earl Williams Sr. opened Monday, July 14, in Santa Cruz County Superior Court. As of press time Wednesday, jury selection was taking place.

Williams is accused of inducing a Scotts Valley High School girl to take and then give him nude photos of herself.

Williams is defended by attorney Paul Meltzer. Jeff Rosell, assistant district attorney, is the prosecutor.

Before the jury selection process began, Judge Heather Morse denied motions by Rosell and Meltzer to exclude evidence of Williams’ character. Morse made it clear, however, that the lawyers must not ask witnesses their opinion of Williams.

This development likely will allow testimony about Williams’ interactions with young people.

The trial was estimated to take two weeks, but it may go longer, because the defense has a potential witness list of 35 names and the prosecution submitted 27 names.

The trial is taking place at the county’s Watsonville courthouse.
