Local outfielder nearly makes All-Star team
Philadelphia Phillies slugging outfielder Pat Burrell, a former Redwood Elementary, San Lorenzo Valley Junior High and SLV High student, is one of five National League players who were nominated to the Major League Baseball game "Final Vote."
Fans cast votes for the final player on the All-Star Game roster in the American and National Leagues. Though Milwaukee Brewers slugger Cory Hart was voted into the game, which took place Tuesday, July 15, it was the closest Burrell has come to becoming an All-Star.
Set to spike
Tryouts for a county-wide competitive club volleyball team are set for the middle of August.
Santa Cruz Coast Club Volleyball is a newly created team for boys ages 13 to 18 who want to play in a competitive atmosphere.
The team will travel to tournaments throughout the state and could play in the USA Volleyball junior Olympics next summer.
Tryouts cost $10 and will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16 and from noon to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at Pacific Collegiate Gym. The tryouts will be staggered by age group throughout each day.
