A letter to the editor from Marinka Willig in Felton

EDITOR,

My son and I were driving northbound on Highway 9 in Felton at about 9:55 a.m. When we approached the crosswalk in front of New Leaf Market, I observed a woman walking with a cup of coffee in each hand, looking downward. As she reached the crosswalk, she proceeded to cross without once looking up to see whether a car was coming!

This crosswalk has been clearly marked so that vehicles will proceed cautiously and stop for pedestrians. However, the safety of pedestrians lies not only within drivers; it also lies within the pedestrians.

Pedestrians, it is important that you look both ways prior to crossing at a crosswalk. Your safety is your responsibility as well as drivers’. It is important you look both ways for approaching cars, as well as emergency vehicles, which we always must allow through when they have their lights flashing and sirens going.

As this is not the first time I have observed either ignorance or arrogance on behalf of pedestrians proceeding to cross the street, I feel the need to address this safety issue.

Marinka Willig, Felton

Speaking of Pedestrians...
written by Sarah Williams, July 18, 2008
There is a serious problem with pedestrian ignorance in Ben Lomond, in front of the BLM Mini Market and Plant Works. I have seen numerous near accidents in this area. Every time I drive through that area, there is either someone standing in the middle of the road waiting to cross the second half of Hwy 9 or darting across the Hwy in front of several vehicles. It is a dangerous situation that needs to be addressed.
