EDITOR,
I am amazed and continually frustrated with letters from the San Lorenzo Valley, such as Ms. Menard’s of Boulder Creek that appeared in the Scotts Valley Press-Banner on July 11 ("Things change").
As a former resident of Manana Woods, she, if anyone, should be able to understand the difficulty her former neighbors will have accessing their homes. As the most recent traffic report shows, the increased traffic, if a Target store is built at the entrance to Scotts Valley, will make it difficult for anyone trying to drive through Scotts Valley via Mt. Herman Road.
I don’t understand the contempt she and many others of SLV exhibit for the residents of Monte Fiore. I believe this type of project is not appropriate in her backyard, in my backyard or in Scotts Valley at all. Do we really need more places to shop?
When I moved here, the proposed Target site had (and still does have) zoning that would not have allowed a big-box store. I suggest that this would be similar to changing the zoning in Boulder Creek to have a landfill, Wal-Mart or prison proposed, all of which some people think are needed and would provide jobs and income for the community, as well as a long list of problems.
As she said in her letter, "We knew that someday homes would be built there" (Monte Fiore). Would the addition of a large, ugly building and huge parking lot make her feel better? Vindicated? Make the area any more beautiful? There is a big difference between homes and a predatory big-box store.
I invite and encourage her to revisit her old neighborhood. It’s one of the areas of Scotts Valley that remains quiet and pretty, with trees and beautiful views. A big-box store will ruin what is nice about this area. Do things always have to "change" for the worse?
