A letter to the editor from Sharon Skold and Liz Taylor-Selling in Felton

EDITOR,

In recognition of our first year as the Valley Fire Awareness Project, we wish to highlight our accomplishments and recognize those who have aided our success.

Over the past year, we developed and distributed fliers, circulated posters and raised banners and signs throughout the San Lorenzo Valley to increase awareness of the valley’s fire danger.

Prevention is a key part of our effort, and VFAP has helped create some effective community responses. Last year, many claimed we overreacted when we suggested fireworks posed a dangerous community problem. This year, with an early start to fire season, no debate and few fireworks occurred in SLV.

Other communities agree. A July Fourth fireworks ban took place in Watsonville, even though some local nonprofits lost fundraising revenues. Signs raising fire threat awareness, like Tex Anderson’s signs saying “Fireworks aren’t cool when it’s this hot,” have sprung up all around our mountain communities.

We particularly want to thank the businesses and organizations that contributed to our efforts with dollars and materials: George Wilson Heating and Sheet Metal, Don Walker at Felton Paint and Hardware, Morgan Scarborough and Scarborough Lumber, Cal Fire, Ben Lomond Fire District and Chief John Charcho, Ben Lomond Firefighters Association, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Officers Association, Felton Fire District, Felton Firefighters Association, Felton Fire Auxiliary, Zayante Firefighters Association, Mountain Community Resources, and numerous other individuals. Without the wholehearted generosity of these folks, this effort might have fizzled.

The Valley Fire Awareness Project continues to work toward fire prevention education and activities to keep our area safe from the kind of disasters we’ve seen in the press lately.

Sharon Skold and Liz Taylor-Selling, Felton
