A letter to the editor from Skip and Denese Matthes in Boulder Creek

EDITOR,

At the September meeting of the Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District board, directors voted unanimously to rename the Dam Park after former manager Barbara Day.

In 2000, a lawsuit was won by the United States Justice Foundation against BCRPD for public records violations. The BCRPD withheld records from a director. The manager was the only employee in charge of records. She could not produce the records, costing the district $20,000. Missing receipts indicated another $20,000 is unaccounted for.

This employee was replaced in 2004. The new employee requested extra hours, money and help to straighten out the records. Directors George Galt and Paul Storm voted “yes” each time, acknowledging the disorganized state.

According to the Press-Banner, March 7, 2008: current manager Christina Horvat stated there was a 50-year buildup of papers so disorganized it was impossible to find any particular record.

March 14, 2008: director Storm stated that record keeping was in a terrible state.

Aug. 31, 2007: directors Eric Hammer and Tess Fitzgerald said they spent more than 400 hours straightening records.

Former director Terrell and several community members worked hard and secured a $25,000 grant to help satisfy requirements to reinstall the dam. Terrell resigned, and director Galt promised to follow through with the project. He didn’t.

The grant expired, hence there will be no dam. It is appropriate to rename the park.
However, why not honor Julio and Georgina Locatelli, who donated parkland, Pete Robustelli and Hoot Cress, who were instrumental in forming BCRPD, or Alice Wilder, who served many years as director and secretary? These are some of the citizens who served BCRPD.

These are your directors — Eric Hammer, George Galt, Paul Storm, Tess Fitzgerald, Kevin Perry, typical government bureaucrats doing nothing but honoring themselves and aggrandizing an employee who basically did nothing for 30 years except collect a paycheck and benefits via your tax dollars.

I propose naming the Dam Park to ...
written by Ace Noname, September 18, 2008
... "Skip and Denese Matthes Damn Park to Nowhere". Now's that's a name we can believe in! The Matthes must have easily cost BCRPD more than $20K over the 10 odd years or so that they harassed, shouted-down audience participates, threaten malicious and unfounded lawsuits, required restraining orders, and terrorized users of the facilities. I would Press Punter to investigate what the Matthes had cost the district.

Abuse of Fiduciary Responsiblity...
written by tired of the scam, September 18, 2008
Ms. Day was not only the employee in charge of records, she was the only employee, short of a few janitors here and there and subcontractors.
When Denese was a Director, she saw an opportunity to enrich herself, and did so by filing the lawsuit instead of using her authority to direct the resources of the District to solve a problem that amounted to not having enough staff to keep the files in order.
And how did you spend the money you took from the District, Denese? Paying for requested photocopies of phone bills from 1985?
You took advantage of the public's trust then, and you insult us all yet again by discrediting someone who loved our community and our district enough to endure your abuse of power while you were a Board member.
No Director of the District has ever taken money for their service, except for you. Go away, and stop wasting my tax dollars.
And P.S. I love how the Press Banner paints you as a concerned citizen. Yeah, I can think of 20,000 rea$ons why you care sooo much.

Dam

How about the Paul Storm Dam? He's an honest, intelligent man who had the courage to run against the San Lorenzo Valley Water District board juggernaut. Paul, we have to get you on that water board.

The Continuing Saga of Skippie and Dee-Dee
written by Go Away and Stay Away, Matthes', September 19, 2008
If people didn't know who they are, what troublemakers they are, how dishonest they are, and how much they lie, they could almost be taken for legitimate and concerned "overseers" of alleged financial abuse of BCRPD. Do they think anyone who knows anything about them believes the garbage they write? If the situation was as stated in their latest letter, the county would have stepped in long, long ago. For God's sake, get a life, Skippie and Dee-Dee! It's very disappointing that the PB seems to have been sucked in by these cretins. They (or their cohorts) seem to be the only ones allowed to write letters way over the amount of words allotted.

Everyone knows Barbara Day was forced, after 30 years, to leave the District because of the repeated, vicious verbal attacks by the Matthes'. I think Barbara Day Dam would be very fitting.

For the record, in March I did not say the record keeping was in terrible shape. I stated that it had been while Denese was a Director but that the staff and current Board had corrected it.
