A massive response by firefighters contained a wildfire off Graham Hill Road in the area of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Thusday afternoon, Sept. 25.
A helicopter drops water on what's left of the fire off of Graham Hill Road. The response relied on helicopters and air tankers to douse the flames because there were no fire roads leading directly to the fire.
The fire burned about two acres of pine trees and dense underbrush in Henry Cowell off of Graham Hill Road beyond Roaring Camp Railroad. It was contained by fire crews with the aid of four air tankers and two helicopters at about 3:30 p.m.
Helicopters continued to douse the area as hand crews cut underbrush for hours after the flames were licked.
More than 150 fire personel from almost every agency in the county responded to the scene after initial reports of smoke at 2:22 p.m.
"We had a great response by all the county agencies," said Cal Fire Battalion Chief Rob Sherman. "We got out there and took care of business."
Cal Fire led the response which included firefighters from agencies in Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Zayante, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Aptos and Central Fire.
There were no direct roads to the fire and fire personel on the ground relied on a single hose line and work by five hand crews from the Cal Fire Ben Lomond Conservation Camp as helicopters and air tankers made passes with water and fire retardant.
