A letter to the editor from Dan Selling in Felton
EDITOR, I’m writing in response to a letter in the Sept. 12th Press-Banner (“Felton, not Smellton”) that remarks: “If you have ever been at the Safeway parking lot when the sewage treatment has failed …” Well, I have. On three occasions, I contacted the county Public Works Department to report that the septic had failed and wastewater was flowing into the street. This was before the owner installed the package treatment plant in late 2005. Since the new system has been installed, I have not observed — or smelled — any problems. The owner or owners should be praised for fixing this problem. The treatment system at the affordable housing development will have a similar package treatment system in use. This is a proven technology in use at thousands of facilities throughout the country. But any system can fail, so I have to ask: Should you not be allowed to build your new home because the septic system might fail? I know. It’s a silly question.
