A letter to the editor from Karen Guggenheim in Ben Lomond
EDITOR, What was this senseless slaughter of trees that happened this June on Graham Hill Road? Pacific Gas and Electric Co. cut the trees, but who made the decision to cut them down, and why? By no stretch of the imagination can this be considered “tree trimming.” The banks are already sliding. When the rains come, those banks will undoubtedly wash right onto Graham Hill Road. I predict that after the rains come, there will be many road closures to clean up and repair the damage. It is this very kind of disregard for our environment that imperils our planet’s survival. When will mankind learn that the damage he causes to the Earth he really causes to himself? To quote Chief Seattle: “Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. All things are connected.” Who is to be held accountable for this senseless destruction? How can we prevent this sort of thing in the future? These aren’t rhetorical questions — I really want an answer. Does anyone out there have any ideas?
