A Press Banner editorial
In November 2007, we at the Press-Banner reported that a Boulder Creek man was campaigning for bus shelters in the San Lorenzo Valley. Nearly 10 months later, we checked back in with the man to see if the shelters had been constructed and found something surprising: Only one new shelter had been built (in Scotts Valley), while no shelterless locations along the Highway 9 corridor have been improved, the ones where the man travels almost daily. For his insistence, the man may have earned a reputation among Santa Cruz Metro employees and county staff as a nuisance, but his issue is a valid one. On wet or sweltering hot days in the valley, there are few places for bus riders to seek cover where they can be seen by bus drivers. We urge Metro to move the installation of bus shelters in the San Lorenzo Valley to the top of its to-do list. The process has already taken too long, and we fear it will take even longer than the three or four months predicted by the general manager. The shelters for the Boulder Creek Fire Station, Highlands Park and Brookdale are already purchased and sitting in a warehouse. Just a few hours of labor can solve this issue for the next decade. We understand the Felton Faire shelter situation is a little more complicated because of the property; however, we believe a suitable solution will be found there. As ridership increases because of tough economic times, we ask Metro to consider its riders first and move forward with installation in a timely manner so that riders will not have to spend all winter in the rain.
