Craig MacFaden of Lompico will serve four months in jail after pleading no contest to bypassing his electrical meter to grow marijuana.
In a plea deal, he also will repay Pacific Gas and Electric Co. more than $3,000. Superior Court Judge Samuel Stevens handed down the sentence Sept. 19, saying he doubted that MacFaden would qualify for the sheriff’s work-furlough program.
MacFaden, 59, had been arrested at his Lake Boulevard home July 17 after sheriff’s detectives investigating a tip that he had bypassed the meter also found a marijuana garden.
Sgt. Steve Carney said MacFaden had rigged a cable to bypass the meter after his power reportedly had been disconnected for failure to pay his bill.
When detectives arrived, MacFaden reportedly ran to the bypass cable, yanked it off the power line running to the house and tossed it into nearby bushes. That led to an evidence-destruction charge in addition to charges of commercial marijuana cultivation and power theft.
Once at the house, the detectives found and eradicated more than 400 marijuana plants growing indoors and outdoors.
