Knee-length plaid kilts, bagpipes, games of strength and skill, and friendly people from far and wide will enjoy a day of fun and Celtic spirit at Highlands Park on Saturday, Oct. 4. Tickets are now on sale for the 13th annual Loch Lomond Highland Games and Celtic Gathering. “There is so much to do,” said organizer Rhyli Esser. “We have music, the athletics, living history, lots of vendors. It’s a cultural event.”
Besides enjoying traditional Celtic foods like bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie and haggis (a sausage-like dish with oatmeal), attendees can watch athletic competition at its best. The games feature games of strength and technique. The athletes will toss the caber, shot-put the stone, throw the Scottish hammer and walk with weights at their side in the farmers walk. A solo bagpipe competition highlights the most talented pipers, and more than 40 clans and societies will host booths and participate in the games. Living history exhibits and the Celtic Critters petting zoo are also part of the fun. People of all ages are encouraged to come enjoy the day and learn about the history of their family name. Almost anyone who has ancestry in Northern Europe can look up his or her name at a clan table and learn about their Old World roots. Many local musicians will also fill the air with sweet melodies throughout the festivities. “Come early and stay late,” encouraged Esser.
