As part of its annual campaign to help out San Lorenzo Valley school music programs, the San Lorenzo Valley Community Band is directing parking for the Loch Lomond Highland Games on Saturday, Oct. 4. Band members will collect a $2-per-car donation, and all the proceeds will help buy band instruments, music, stands and satisfy the various needs of the music program. The band was created in 1995 and has helped rebuild the music program at the high school, middle school and elementary school. This year, the band has paid for two music educators at the schools. Mila Olson has created a beginning band program at the elementary school and a full middle school band, along with instrument instruction at the middle school. Dan Lingenfelter has a vision for the high school — to bring music to students through traditional band programs and contemporary instruments like guitars and synthesizers. He envisions the high school having its own recording studio and music writing to encourage musical careers. The band welcomes new members and rehearsals are Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SLV High band room. The season is starting, and the band will perform at Christmas and Memorial Day and a host of other performances.
