A Scotts Valley man was arrested at his home on suspicion of homicide following a fatal stabbing in downtown Santa Cruz early Saturday, Sept. 27.

A Scotts Valley man was arrested at his home on suspicion of homicide following a fatal stabbing in downtown Santa Cruz early Saturday, Sept. 27. Benedict Hayward, 27, is one of the two suspects in the stabbing of Santa Cruz’s Justin Zuk after an argument outside a bar on Pacific Avenue. Dylan Bayly, 27, of Santa Cruz, who is the other suspect, turned himself in to the Santa Cruz Police Department early Monday, Sept. 29.

Sept. 27
A fire that started in an uninhabited structure off Hubbard Gulch Road in Ben Lomond at about 4 a.m. burned 2½ acres of brush before firefighters contained the blaze later that morning. The cause of the fire is undetermined, but the California Department of Forestry said it started inside the structure.

Sept. 25
A fire burned about 2 acres of pine trees and dense underbrush in Henry Cowell State Park off Graham Hill Road before it was contained at about 3:30 p.m. The fire ignited in a remote location off the road and required the support of four helicopters, two air tankers and five hand crews from Cal Fire’s Ben Lomond Conservation Camp. No one knows what caused the blaze.

Sept. 28
A wallet, keys and a shirt were found at 4 p.m. on the 9600 block of Highway 9 in Ben Lomond.

Sept. 24
A caller reported that a man had been trying to sell marijuana to three young female students at 1 p.m. on the 8500 block of Highway 9 in Ben Lomond.

Sept. 23
A man said he was battered by his girlfriend’s daughter. The man was not injured but wanted the girl prosecuted for assault. The girl was later arrested.

Sept. 22
Someone went into a man’s rental house and stole property after kicking in two locked doors at 10:03 a.m. on the 300 block of Lazy Woods Drive in Ben Lomond.

Sept. 21
A woman found her tires had been slashed at 7 p.m. on the 100 block of Kings Highway in Boulder Creek.

A man received a ticket for a noise violation at 1:10 a.m. on the 400 block of Riverside Avenue in Ben Lomond.

A woman’s car window had been smashed and things were taken from inside at 5 p.m. on the 7100 block of Hacienda Way in Felton.

The passenger-side window of a woman’s vehicle was smashed at 4:30 p.m., and a purse containing a digital camera valued at $485 was stolen.

An unidentified woman called Cal Fire dispatch and threatened to shoot down their planes if they did not stop flying overhead.

Sept. 18
Someone kicked a warehouse door open and stole a generator on Geyer Road in Scotts Valley at midnight. Windows were also broken out of a vehicle parked inside the warehouse.

Sept. 28
A cement brick was thrown through the rear window of a woman’s car at 11:47 a.m. on the 100 block of Southwood Drive. 

Sept. 26
A 19-year-old man was arrested at his home on the 100 block of Southwood Drive after police found in his room stolen credit cards, purses and personal belongings supposedly from three thefts in the Granite Creek area. Police served a search warrant on the home after the man’s parent called the police.

Two 17-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of using a “wrist rocket” to pelt a coffee shop on Scotts Valley Drive with paintballs twice Sept. 25 and one time Sept. 26. A patron followed the boys’ car and took their license plate number on their alleged third attempt.

Graffiti was found spray-painted on the back wall of a business on the 6000 block of Scotts Valley Drive at 9:14 p.m.

Sept. 22
Someone walked into an office on the 4700 block of Scotts Valley Drive and stole a laptop containing personal information at 1:28 p.m.
