Services will be Saturday, Oct. 4, for Andrew Joesten, 86, who died Sept. 19 at his home after a two-year battle with cancer.
Born to William and Margaret Joesten in San Francisco and raised in San Jose, he graduated St. Patrick’s Elementary, Bellarmine College preparatory school and Santa Clara University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he received a Purple Heart Medal.
After raising five children in San Jose, Mr. Joesten and his wife moved to Scotts Valley in 1976. He retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco after 43 years. He loved reading, gardening, bargain hunting and spending time with his large family. He was a longtime San Francisco Giants and 49er fan.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Nan Joesten of Scotts Valley; and five children, Stephen Joesten, and his wife, Karen, of Los Gatos, Stephanie Lykam, Margo Gorini, and her husband, Richard, of San Jose, Michele Bo of Mountain View and Patrice Joesten of Scotts Valley; and 14 grandchildren, Danielle, Jenni, Shauna, Melissa, Scott, Robbie, Andrew, Michael, Maggie, Joey, Andi, Ali, Mimi and Stevie.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Joesten; granddaughter, Lisa Lykam; and son-in-law, Dave Bo.
Saturday’s services will begin at 11 a.m. at San Agustin Church in Scotts Valley.
