St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ben Lomond will look like a petting zoo Sunday, Oct. 5, as the church conducts its annual Blessing of the Animals.
Pet owners have been coming to the ceremony for 30 years with dogs, cats, horses, fish, turkeys, tadpoles, goats, lizards, turtles, rabbits, snakes, mice and hamsters, according to longtime parishioners.
“It’s just about anything that moves,” said Sharon Fishel, director of the church preschool and a parishioner for two decades.
Officiating will be the Rev. Jim Thomas, associated pastor of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga. Ben Lomond recently lost the Rev. Keith Johnson, the church’s rector, who moved out of the area.
The blessing honors the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the Christian patron saint of animals.
In recent years, the live animals have begun to be joined by stuffed ones like teddy bears.
Once a 6-year-old parishioner named Martin brought his 3-foot-tall toy dragon named Cyberspace. Martin had been having bad dreams and said he hoped blessing Cyberspace would help. Martin’s mother said it worked.
