A letter to the editor from Bob LaPointe in Brookdale

EDITOR,

My personal feelings are against a big-box store in light of the Town Center that is planned for Scotts Valley. However, if community leaders decide to allow Target to proceed with a new building, which will be amortized over many years as an incentive so they pay less taxes, I have a suggestion.

Corporate America needs a wake-up call. My suggestion is that the community leaders institute a mandate that any new construction in Scotts Valley, including the Town Center, be maximized for solar energy. Santa Cruz County, and especially Scotts Valley, have ideal conditions for reaping the benefits of the sun, which is the natural source of all energy on the planet — including fossil fuels — and the source of sustenance for all living beings — including mankind.

This mandate would be a historic example we could all be proud of forever. It would also weed out old-school thinking and players who aren’t willing to take responsibility for their footprint in a rapidly changing world. Not only would Scotts Valley establish a precedent, but all future building would benefit handsomely with both state and federal rebates and less costly electricity as time passes. Another very important result would be less demand on the ever aging electric grid.

Just a thought.

Bob LaPointe, Brookdale

I agree that we should be requiring both passive and active solar designs and power generation in new construction.

I realize that Scotts Valley is no Eden but, I'd like the residents of the San Lorenzo Valley to stop using the San Lorenzo River as a toilet for their failing septic systems. Have you checked the fecal count in your own backyard?
