If it helps to have the endorsement of other Assembly members, Barbara Sprenger of Felton and Bill Monning of Monterey have a leg up on other Democratic candidates for the 27th Assembly District seat in the June 3 primary.
On the other hand, if nationally known figures provide an edge, the top spots go to Emily Reilly of Santa Cruz and Monning.

Sprenger has been backed by Sally Lieber and Jim Beall, who represent Assembly districts in Santa Clara County. Monning has the support of Anna Caballero, whose 28th Assembly District adjoins the 27th, as well as former Assemblymen Simon Salinas and Tom Hayden.

Reilly lists among her endorsers Nell Newman, daughter of actor Paul Newman and actress Joanne Woodward and president of Newman’s Own Organics, and John Robbins, author of “Diet for a New America” and “The Food Revolution.” Both live in Santa Cruz County.

Monning counters with Luis Valdez, founder of El Teatro Campesino and producer of “Zoot Suit” and “La Bamba,” and Dolores Huerta, co-founder with Cesar Chavez of the United Farm Workers union.

If sheer numbers of endorsers win the race, Monning leads the pack, with 513 listed on his Web site. Sprenger is next with 280, Reilly lists 142 and Stephen Barkalow, a Carmel chiropractor, has 103.

The Democratic primary also includes Doug Deitch, an Aptos water activist, who hasn’t announced endorsements. Similarly, Robert Murray, a Republican, and Mark Hinkle, a Libertarian, are in the race but have not disclosed endorsements.
The largely Democratic district includes Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley. Incumbent John Laird will be termed out at the end of this year.

Finally, a candidate who understands the plight of dog owners in Santa Cruz County. We need Barbara to take on the state parks department to overturn the deal Reilly made to get our dogs tied up.
