County newspaper shuts down

Bimonthly newspaper The Post printed its final issue June 14.

First published Feb. 14, 1978, as The Great Exchange, the publication became The Mid-County Post in 1989 and eventually The Valley Post before becoming The Post.

The paper was owned and published out of Capitola and claimed the largest direct-mail circulation in Santa Cruz County. It covered county news, features and events.

Publisher and Editor Mary Bryant wrote in a final piece in the June 14 issue that the paper was closing because the rise in cheaper Internet marketing diminished advertising revenue and chances were remote that the paper would thrive as it did in earlier times.

Boulder Creek contractor retires

Steve DiMare, owner of Steve DiMare Construction, has retired after operating 24 years in the San Lorenzo Valley.

DiMare, 63, moved to Boulder Creek in 1973 and started the construction company in 1988. Building and repairing decks was 85 percent of his work, he said.

“It’s been memorable,” DiMare said. “The valley treated me good.”

He will move to Las Vegas to care for his mother, but will return to the San Lorenzo Valley to visit friends and do a “job or two” as needed, he said.

 Spa expands in BC

Luminescence Day Spa has expanded its downtown Boulder Creek location.

The new space will be a studio for classes in qigong, kundalini yoga, reiki, Tapas acupressure technique and pilates, owner Lizzie Fenton said.

"Being able to offer classes by certified professionals makes me feel confident that I am providing a safe and effective way for people to heal and work on themselves after they leave the spa," Fenton said.

Fenton also added Clearlight infrared saunas to help with detoxification and a garden seating area where clients can relax after sauna treatment.

The spa is at 13140 Highway 9 in Boulder Creek
