Falcons roll in win over rival Cougars

Scotts Valley High School bounced back from a shut-out loss to Aptos by scoring seven touchdowns in a 50-19 win over valley rival San Lorenzo Valley High School last weekend.

The Falcons improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league while SLV dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play.

The Falcons came out firing, as Dalton Locke scored on a 41-yard reception from quarterback Jake Lobo to open the scoring. After a defensive stop, Scotts Valley scored again when Jake Rehnberg punched in a 2-yard touchdown on the ground.

Rehnberg was the Falcons leading rusher on the day, rushing for 220 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns.

Brett Turner recorded a safety to put the Falcons up 16-0.

The Cougars then scored their first touchdown of the day, a 17-yard pass from Patrick Primeau to Jared Trader.

Rehnberg and the Falcons answered back, as he punched in another touchdown from six yards out to give the Falcons a 22-6 lead after a quarter.

SLV scored again in the second, as Jordan Peabody grabbed a 49-yard catch and run touchdown from Isaac Newberry to make the score 22-13.

It was then that the Falcons took control.

Willie Johnston scored the first of his three touchdowns, with a 1-yard plunge, followed by a 2-yard scoring run by Jonathan Velez.

SLV answered with an 11-yard scoring pass from Newberry to Shaden Pias to make it 34-19. However, Logan Sorensen blasted a 31-yard field goal to put the Falcons up 37-19 entering the fourth.

Willie Johnston capped the game for the Falcons with a 41-yard scoring run and a 3-yard plunge to cap the scoring.

Johnston rushed for 140 yards on 11 carries with three touchdowns.

For the Cougars, Newberry was 13 for 38 with two touchdowns, and Brian Robbins caught three passes for 76 yards.

Other highlights included interceptions by Joe Espinola, Alex Turowski and Griffin Curtis for the Falcons and an interception by SLVs Patrick Primeau along with fumble recoveries by Cougars Aaron Campello, Ari Solomon and Aiden Stolting.

The Falcons host Harbor High School for homecoming. The varsity game begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8.

San Lorenzo Valley will travel to Soquel for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Knights the same day.
