A Felton-based poet has recently released “On the Cruz: Poems of Santa Cruz,” a compilation of more than 20 years’ worth of poems highlighting the unique culture, history, and landscape of the county.

Ron Lampi, a renaissance man whose interests – aside from poetry -- include photography, philosophy, writing and astrology, has lived in the Monterey Bay area for 35 years, and in Felton for two.

Lampi said that his newest book, released at the start of the year, is meant to be a companion piece to “Bay of Monterey, Poems of Monterey Bay,” his book of poems about Monterey Bay, published in 2010, and serves as a means of connecting to the essence of Santa Cruz – “poems that celebrate this place.”

“As a poet, I’m very much into writing about our place -- a sense of place,” he said. “There is no other collection of poetry about Santa Cruz that’s this substantial.”

The book, published by Felton-based River Sanctuary Publishing, contains six sections of poems, each exploring an aspect of Santa Cruz. For example, one section addresses the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, another highlights some of the businesses of Santa Cruz, and another takes a look at some of the unique characters of Santa Cruz’s culture.

The poems Lampi included in his book have been meant to be compiled and published he said, but he said he kept being inspired to write as time moved along.

“I had half of it or more written by the late 1990s, then I kept adding to it,” he said.

Lampi highlighted his poem “The Cruz” as one of those he was most proud to include, a 16-page piece which he said was his homage to beat poet Allen Ginsberg’s famous “Howl.”

To celebrate the book’s publication, Lampi will be hosting a spoken word and art exhibition event at the Satellite Telework Center, at 6265 Highway 9 in Felton, on Friday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m.

Lampi, along with other poets, will share his works, and Hallcrest Vineyards will be pouring samples of wine.
