What’s with this obvious letter-writing campaign insinuating Bruce McPherson “doesn’t know the valley”? Bruce McPherson has been in Santa Cruz County all his life, which means, I bet, that he’s been here longer than anyone who was asked to pen those letters. From the time that he was a county reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, which included writing articles about the San Lorenzo Valley, McPherson has shown a better understanding of the valley than any of the other people who have indicated they may run for 5th District county supervisor.

Furthermore, voters of the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley have supported him every time he has run for election, and he’s served us very well as a state senator, an assembly member and California’s secretary of state. Bruce has stood up for us when we needed financial assistance for our fire districts, when he co-authored the bond for funds we received to build the park in Boulder Creek, and when he signed the ballot agreement for Measure R to provide some financial security for our libraries in Boulder Creek, Felton and Scotts Valley. He consistently supported measures for our public schools, and more.

Bruce McPherson knows the needs of the valley very well, and we are fortunate that, with his experience, he wants to serve the people of the 5th District on the county board of supervisors.

We are residents of Santa Cruz County who have decided to take urgent action because if Bruce McPherson is elected to our Board of Supervisors it will shift the center of political gravity in our community decisively to the right. Please reply to this email to JOIN US.

McPherson does not represent the people of the 5th district, or even live within its historical boundaries. He does not represent the 99%. Instead he represents the 1% who profit from Republican policies, lives in a mansion in exclusive Pasatiempo Estates, and has a long history of strategic leadership AGAINST our Santa Cruz values under cover of a dangerously friendly "moderate Republican" smile...

As California Secretary of State,

* he certified the easily hacked Diebold voting machines, and

* he disqualified 40% of newly registered voters in Los Angeles (mostly Latino) as part of national pattern of Republican voter suppression.

As a state legislator,

* he refused to help his Felton constituents (FLOW) win back control of their water supply from German multinational company,

* he voted AGAINST state laws expanding domestic partner rights, outlawing bullying in schools, and other GLBT rights,

* he received a 50% rating from Planned Parenthood - identified as "leans anti-choice”, and

* he voted against state laws banning sweatshop conditions in state contractors’ workplaces.

As editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Bruce McPherson campaigned...

* against preserving Wilder Ranch,

* in favor of developing Lighthouse Field, and

* in favor of building a nuclear power plant in Davenport

He's a Republican, in other words, for a reason. Do you think he’ll represent YOUR values and interests?

Because Democrats are less likely to vote in the primary election, the coming election offers Republican Bruce McPherson his best chance of winning a seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. That's why we're getting organized to remind our Democratic neighbors in the 5th district to VOTE!

We will be proud and happy to work with you on another meaningful, exciting campaign.

I disagree. just because this guy lives in Pasatiempo does NOT make him the best guy for the job. What is he going to do with this so called wealth of knowledge if we elect him? I do not hear him speaking up on real issues that will and are affecting us that truly live in the SLV and not over by santa cruz. Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Bonny Doon and Felton have REAL issue that need to be addressed and Mark Stone is no where to be seen...how do we know if Bruce truly understands the needs of mountain dwellers. Libraries and parks are nice but what about infrastructure? Better Sheriff coverage? Water Issues? Roads? past performance does not guarantee future results, especially in this time of concern about career politicians. Maybe we need some new blood instead of an old sself professed "expert"

"McPherson has shown a better understanding of the valley than any of the other people who have indicated they may run for 5th District county supervisor."

And a better understanding of the valley than any other past elected 5th District Supervisors. That's the clincher!
