A 23-year-old Scotts Valley man who walked out of his parents’ home and was missing for more than four days was found Tuesday, Jan. 8, in Scotts Valley.

Alex Fossgreen, who was reported missing by Don and Veronique Fossgreen on Sunday, Jan. 6, was spotted by Scotts Valley police on Kings Village Road in Scotts Valley at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

“It was the best news I could get in my life,” said his father, Don Fossgreen, on Tuesday.

The family contacted the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office after the young man did not return home from an early-morning walk.

The sheriff’s office launched a full-scale search effort that included a helicopter crew and teams walking and riding on horseback through Fall Creek and Henry Cowell parks, where Fossgreen was known to hike.

“I feel like a fool, but I feel good I did (contact authorities), because he was walking and anything could have happened,” said Don Fossgreen. “I am thankful to the whole Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz community. They just rallied around us.”

Alex Fossgreen reportedly left his parents’ home on Lockewood Lane just outside of Scotts Valley at about 4 a.m. Friday without his cellphone. He took his passport and driver’s license but did not take his bicycle or a car.

The young man, who had a difficult breakup with his fiancée in March, reportedly walked through the San Lorenzo Valley to Bonny Doon and hitchhiked to San Francisco before returning to Scotts Valley, where he was seen by several residents and contacted by police.

“He went on a journey of self-discovery,” Don Fossgreen said. “He was so focused that he didn’t even realize he hadn’t left a note.”

Authorities said the 23-year-old told them he had taken a camping trip and did not realize he was considered a missing person.

No harm befell the young man during his trip.

“He’s probably 125 pounds from all that walking,” Don Fossgreen said. “Aside from that, he’s fine.”
