SLV students honored in scholarship competition

San Lorenzo Valley High School seniors Russell Hofvendahl and Margaret Tomasello have been named commended students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

About 34,000 commended students around the nation were recognized for scoring in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT, also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

As previously reported, Devon Northcott, also a senior at SLV High, is one of about 16,000 semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. About 8,300 scholarships will be awarded in the spring. 


Boys find lost dog after two weeks

Two local boys found a white pit bull that had been missing for two weeks underneath a house near Cornerstone service station in Felton on Monday, Oct. 8.

The boys, Matt Young and Benjamin Raymond, had searched for the dog, Sheila, since she was hit by a motorcycle Sept. 26 near the 6100 block of Highway 9 and ran away.

Sheila, owned by Jim Cavanaugh of Felton, appeared to be in fine condition, albeit hungry, according to a neighbor who helped with the search.


Local starts grad school in Massachusetts

Jason Cherry started graduate school this fall at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Cherry will study public policy in the university’s master’s program.

He grew up in Bonny Doon, where he attended Bonny Doon Elementary School and was a home-schooled student through Alternative Family Education.


Seaman completes training

Emily A. Sabedra, a Navy seaman apprentice, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Sabedra, the daughter of Terry Lavergne-Sabedra of Eureka and Adam Sabedra of Scotts Valley, completed an eight-week program of classroom study and physical, practical and survival training.

She is a 2009 graduate of Eureka Senior High School in Eureka.


Marine deployed to Afghanistan

Lance Cpl. Robert D. Grijalva, a 2005 Scotts Valley High School graduate, is in Helmand Province in Afghanistan with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Grijalva, who joined the Marines in October 2008, is assigned to Heavy Helicopter Squadron 362, which has its home port at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in Hawaii.
