Superintendent applauded by county

San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District superintendent Julie Haff was honored as one of three 2012-13 educators of the year chosen by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.

Haff was joined by Laura Hamby, a site program coordinator at Mission Hill Middle School, and John Simms, a math teacher at Aptos Junior High School.

A selection committee reviewed 38 nominations based on ability to create passion for learning, high expectations for all students, a strong sense of values, integrity and ethics, strong communication skills, knowledge of the subject and energy and enthusiasm.

Haff was honored April 18 by the board of education and received a plaque. Her photo will be included in the County Office of Education annual report. 


High school student takes new post

Adrian Miller, a junior at San Lorenzo Valley High School, took office as master councilor of Santa Cruz Chapter, Order of DeMolay on Saturday, April 20, at the Santa Cruz Masonic Center.

DeMolay is an organization for boys and young men 12 to 21 years old that helps develop civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills.

Master councilor is the highest position in a chapter.


Sisters named Red Cross heroes

Autumn and Simone Bushard, high school-aged sisters from Ben Lomond, have been named Youth Heroes by the American Red Cross.

The sisters have worked with Valley Churches United Missions to gather nutritious, organic food from vendors at the Santa Cruz Farmers Market for distribution to low-income families, seniors and the disabled. 

Their efforts have resulted in more than $26,000 in fresh organic food donated to the hunger-fighting organization.

The Bushards will be recognized at the Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on May 15 at the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom, 400 Beach St., in Santa Cruz.


Local earns dean’s list honor

Daniela McIntire of Felton has been named to the dean's list at the Savannah College of Art and Design for the 2012 fall quarter.

McIntire earned a GPA of 3.5 or better for the quarter.
