EDITOR,

Now more than ever, due to dramatically declining budgets and dwindling resources for public safety agencies such as the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, our community needs elected officials with the experience and knowledge to get us back on track. As sheriff, I am endorsing Bruce McPherson for 5th District supervisor. I have worked with Bruce for many years, and I know that he has the experience and knowledge to help the sheriff’s office fulfill our mission. Bruce’s experience and dedication will help create an environment where we can work collaboratively to find creative solutions to our most challenging issues. Bruce is a true friend of community policing and local law enforcement. He is serious about supporting the entire community and helping police, deputy sheriffs and firefighters do the best job possible. I encourage everyone to join me in supporting Bruce McPherson for 5th District supervisor.

Phil Wowak, Santa Cruz County sheriff

We are residents of Santa Cruz County who have decided to take urgent action because Bruce McPherson’s election to our Board of Supervisors will create better opportunities for all members of our district. For the first time in decades we will have a Supervisor who places importance on public safety, a healthy economy, and an honest representation of the office.

The other candidate is a tool who does not even live in Boulder Creek. A tool for very small, smallminded, special interest groups who are more concerned about feeding at the public trough than they are about the health of our district.

McPherson represents ideas and actions that will benefit everyone. You see, when families are safe and prosper, then social services get the support they need. McPherson is the only candidate who realizes this. Well, Smallman kinda gets it too.

Bruce McPherson’s documented work with environmental leaders, schools and public safety agencies assures that he will be strong advocate for the residents of the 5th District. His endorsements speak loudly about his connections to the people who help keep our neighborhoods safe and strong, our environment secure, and our residents working.

It is no surprise that people like Jack O’Neill, Renee Shepherd, Sam Robustelli, Dr. Gary Griggs, Gail Ow, and so many more, support Bruce.

What a load of crap that is. Apparently you've taken a drink of the "good ole boy" koolaid....

Mcpherson is PART OF THE PROBLEM we have in government today. How is that tell you he's going to be part of the solution?

Please explain how Hammer is a "tool"

Please explain how McPherson knows and cares about the average guy/gal in the SLV. He doesn't have a clue. He's a rich CAREER POLITICIAN with his ex-employer mouthpiece in his pocket.

We don't need more of the same- we need CHANGE, and that's what Hammer will provide. Change in the county planning department, change in county funding to Public Works. We just don't see how "Politics as usual" McPherson is going to do ANY good for this county, this district or the SLV.

electing McPherson is like re-electing Stone. the SLV will have a supervisor an hour a week who doesn't hear our problems and doesn't care. Its pretty sad that the regular person, the average member of our community has literally no say in this- why do I care what Jack O'Niell, Sam Robustelli say? They're all rich people who don't have to drive our torn up county roads every day to get to work, who have the money to pay their way thru county planning issues.

MCPHERSON IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PEOPLE OF OUR DISTRICT AND WON'T HELP THE 99% AS HE'S PART OF THE 1%!

Oh Baloney..Not a Democratic /Republican thing. That is what the Hammer campaign is all about. Constantly bringing up Bruce is old Republican and as a matter of fact we just rec'd, our 5th one this week of a Hammer ad in mail let me quote" The Democratic Choice for Supervisor, this election could CHANGE the entire makeup of our county" and I won't bother going into the supporters as I am sure you know.(Democratic) So now I am confused you guys want change from the same old but the Hammer campaign is going on if he's not elected there is going to be change.

@OMG, that's not how you win. You are mistakenly associating your candidate with Mark Stone related groups and issues. That's a sure path to defeat.

Also, McPherson stand with President Barack Obama in legislating LGBT rights.

Finally, this campaign which purports to be not affiliated with any candidate is a joke. People see right through it.

Just sayin.

Ella, you need to take your blinders off.

Where has McPherson officially stated he has that position? Hes a Republican. Republicans only care about the rich getting richer. They're the 1% as Baloney eluded to... so... how again is beliefs like that going to help US????

Get over your 1% BS. 7 of the top 10 wealthiest Senators are Democrats and I am sure they really care about you. Get a job(outside of gov't)..work hard ..save(u don't need that i-phone). Stop blaming everyone else who has worked hard saved and purchased within their means. Santa Cruz is a dope dealing gov't that get's the down and out so hooked on free services that they realize why work. Look at the bums and killings now in downtown

Holy cow @top10! If there were a "like" button, I'd click it. You said it great!

This dialogue about Reps vs Dems, Lib vs Conservative, it just so totally lame.

Since when does this have to do with Democrats versus Republicans? first off, this is a non partisan post...

You read between the lines. We never said anything about a party. We simply stated that Rich folks (1%) don't have a clue what the rest of us (99%) need. Rich folks don't need to worry about the condition of roads or dealing with the planning department and all their red tape.

Try to stay on topic, OK? We know it's tough when you are so subjective and can't possibly consider other viewpoints.

Mr Baloney, read the posts above. Definite issues with Republican vs Democrat. Your candidate uses it ad nauseum.

Please try to be not so full of hate. It's most unpleasant.

There was no hate, just a statement of facts. We didn't state which candidate we supported, only that we don't support McPherson and his cronyism and "business as usual". We also asked that it be explained how Hammer is a "tool" since it is quite obvious the writer of that comments does not know the man. And we know Smallman too. We're being objective in our observations but when it is clear the other two candidates are underdogs to the almighty "experienced one" It seems to us that it needs to be pointed out that all these experienced politicians in office over the recent past are part of the problem and not part of the solution when basic infrastructure issues in the rural areas of the county are not being supported. Luckily the Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz portions of the county have their own funding for infrastructure, so its clear that the SLV needs to be properly represented.

Again, no hate, just concern that your objectiveness is blurred. Good luck with that!

So, then McPherson mirrors Barack Obama's record on LGBT issues.

Whew! What a relief!

Thanks for the info. I'll pass it on.

We are residents of Santa Cruz County who have decided to take urgent action because if Bruce McPherson is elected to our Board of Supervisors it will shift the center of political gravity in our community decisively to the right. Please reply to this email to JOIN US.

McPherson does not represent the people of the 5th district, or even live within its historical boundaries. He does not represent the 99%. Instead he represents the 1% who profit from Republican policies, lives in a mansion in exclusive Pasatiempo Estates, and has a long history of strategic leadership AGAINST our Santa Cruz values under cover of a dangerously friendly "moderate Republican" smile...

As California Secretary of State,

* he certified the easily hacked Diebold voting machines, and

* he disqualified 40% of newly registered voters in Los Angeles (mostly Latino) as part of national pattern of Republican voter suppression.

As a state legislator,

* he refused to help his Felton constituents (FLOW) win back control of their water supply from German multinational company,

* he voted AGAINST state laws expanding domestic partner rights, outlawing bullying in schools, and other GLBT rights,

* he received a 50% rating from Planned Parenthood - identified as "leans anti-choice”, and

* he voted against state laws banning sweatshop conditions in state contractors’ workplaces.

As editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Bruce McPherson campaigned...

* against preserving Wilder Ranch,

* in favor of developing Lighthouse Field, and

* in favor of building a nuclear power plant in Davenport

He's a Republican, in other words, for a reason. Do you think he’ll represent YOUR values and interests?

Because Democrats are less likely to vote in the primary election, the coming election offers Republican Bruce McPherson his best chance of winning a seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. That's why we're getting organized to remind our Democratic neighbors in the 5th district to VOTE!

We will be proud and happy to work with you on another meaningful, exciting campaign.

for democracy not corporatocracy-

Nice one, Phil. Once again you show your lack of respect (or understanding of the needs) of the SLV with this article. Not sure what Mcpherson is gonna do for US when your daily staff of two deputies per shift for the ENTIRE SLV is what YOU consider adequate... McPherson doesn't understand OUR needs, and apparently neither do you. Does our crime have to double, triple or quadruple in order to get your attention? Sad.

We don't need business as usual. We need thinking outside the box; a life long politician, while he may keep your work life simple won't help make things better for those of us who actually wish we could count on your office to do their job in the SLV adequately. Do you actually live in the 5th district??? Or in the SLV??? I am betting not.

I agree Baloney. You all may recall late in 2010, when Debra Collins, and avid local hiker, went missing. Mr Wowak was contacted and told this and did nothing. He said the land area is too vast. He could of contact search and rescue teams with dogs, hiking all the common local trails and probably would of found her in two days. She spent 6, and I can't believe she survived. Then Maurice Ainsworth was escorted to Dominican for an MRI for shoulder pain with a single officer, and you all know what happened after that. Mr Wowak reported that we need to "study" their methods. I'll tell you what you need to do #1, People don't want to pay for high cost health care, (unwarranted MRI), for young healthy prisoners, and 2, If you do have to 2 officers required at all times.
