Scotts Valley High School’s baseball team snuck into the CCS playoffs, too, but fell in a first-round nail-biter.

The Cougar baseball team defeated first-round opponent Stevenson High School 7-2 on May 16 before succumbing in the second round to Menlo School in Atherton on Saturday, May 19.
Against Menlo, the Cougars baseball team managed only one hit, a single by Scott Petroskey in the fourth, falling 8-1. They scored a run in the third on a throwing error.
In the first-round win, Scott Petroskey pitched a complete game, allowing two runs to pace the Cougars, who finished the season 15-8.
The softball team defeated Notre Dame of San Jose 7-2 in Felton on May 16. Mariah Lindberg threw the complete-game four-hitter, and Michelle Hitt went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
The win put SLV into a quarterfinal matchup with league rival Soquel High. The Knights defeated the Cougars 7-6 in eight innings Saturday in Salinas on a walk-off hit.
The Cougars led 6-4 in the sixth, but Soquel sent the game into extra innings and won it in the bottom of the eighth. The SLV softball team finished the season 21-5.

The Falcons battled back from a 5-0 deficit after four innings to narrow the gap to one run but fell to Monterey High 6-5 in the first round of the CCS playoffs on May 16.
Joe Gillette had a two-run single during the rally, and Sean Verenkamp and Matt Snider each went 2-for-4 with an RBI each in the loss.
Scotts Valley finished the season 12-13 after a late-season push propelled their record to 12-12, putting them into the playoffs.
