Girls soccer trumps Santa Cruz

Following a 6-0 win over San Lorenzo Valley High on Jan. 31, the Scotts Valley girls soccer team downed previously undefeated Santa Cruz High School 2-1 on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Depot Field.

The Falcons improved to 5-1-3 in league while the Cardinals fell to 7-1-2, remaining in first place.

Santa Cruz had previously defeated Scotts Valley, 2-1, on Jan. 10.

Freshman Emmy Koflanovich scored two first-half goals that were both assisted, and senior goalkeeper Emily Johnson made six saves for the Falcons.

Koflanovich got the Falcons on the board first with a goal in the 11th minute, assisted by senior Madison Black. She scored again in the 37th minute, and was assisted by Taylor Raymond.

Santa Cruz answered with a goal in the 39th minute, but the Falcons’ defense limited Santa Cruz’s opportunities throughout the contest.

Scotts Valley has three games remaining before the Central Coast Section playoffs, including tough contests against fourth place Soquel on Thursday, Feb. 7, which happened after press time. Third place Aptos also looms on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Local surf team bests Soquel

The Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League announced last week that after a recalculation of points from its most recent contest Jan. 12 at Manresa State Beach, the Santa Cruz Mountains Surf Team was victorious over Soquel High with a final score of 60-59.

It’s the Mountains team’s second victory out of three competitions this season.

Scotts Valley High sophomore Evan Milnes was awarded first place in the individual bodyboarding competition. He defeated students from six other local schools, as well as competitors from Half Moon Bay, for the title.

Conditions for the contest were reportedly excellent, with 4- to5-foot waves, offshore winds and clear skies.

Baseball fundraising dinner and auction

The Scotts Valley High baseball program will have a dinner and silent auction Friday, Feb. 8, at Bruno’s BBQ, 230G Mount Hermon Road, in Scotts Valley.

Proceeds will go toward improving the Falcons’ baseball facilities.

Among the auction items include tickets to the Golden State and Santa Cruz Warriors; San Jose Sharks tickets; San Francisco Giants tickets; and autographed Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, Marco Scutaro, Ryan Vogelsong and Angel Pagan baseballs, wines and other memorabilia.

Tickets are $25 at the door or $20 in advance. They are available from Wendy Hillan at 262-2366.
