Ben Lomond’s Mountain Community Theater will present “Moon Over Buffalo” as its first play of the season.

Director Peter Gelblum, an MCT veteran, said somebody proposed the play to MCT and everyone on the selection committee laughed out loud.

“It was just so funny, and I think it’s a good way to start the season — to send people out the door laughing like crazy,” Gelblum said.

The performance, originally a Broadway production staring Carol Burnett and Philip Bosco, has five doors on one stage and includes physical, hands-on comedy.

According to Bill Leifhelm, the production and publicity manager for MCT, the five doors are a key element to the play, which is set at the Erlanger Theater in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1953.

The local production stars Tara McMilin in the role of Charlotte Hay and Mike Stark in the role of George Hay.

Leifhelm said that Charlotte and George are resident ensemble players at the Erlanger who were big on Broadway but have been relegated to performing repertory theatre in places like Buffalo.

The conceit sets up a tremendous level of laughter, Leifhelm said.

“I guarantee you or anybody else sitting through this production are going to be laughing your head off and doing your best not to fall into the aisle way, because it’s that funny,” he said. “I have never seen this level of comedy and humor other than in this play.”

“Moon over Buffalo” is appropriate for audiences ages 11 and older and will show at Park Hall in Ben Lomond from March 29 through April 14, the day before federal income taxes are due.

“This is the tax time of year,” Leifhelm said. “So, if you want something to make you not think of tax time, this is it.”

A Champagne reception will be held after the first performance on March 29, and a talk with the cast and the director will be held after the matinee performance on April 7.
