SLV runner wins mile, sets record

San Lorenzo Valley High School junior Anna Maxwell ran a 4-minute, 47.01-second mile to set a meet record at the Saturday, March 30, Stanford Invitational track meet in Palo Alto.

Maxwell’s race-winning time was the fastest for the distance in California this season and the second-fastest time in the nation.

Vanessa Fraser, a senior from Scotts Valley, took sixth with a time of 4:56.43. S Claire MacMillan from SLV was ninth with a time of 5:03.86.

For the boys, Cody Johnson of SLV ran the mile in 4:19.12 to finish seventh out of 45 runners.

Cougars win on diamond

The San Lorenzo Valley girls softball team defeated Santa Cruz High School 6-2 on March 28 behind a strong outing from starting pitcher Adriane Cope.

Cope tossed a complete game, striking out seven while walking two.

Rachel Smith and Kendall O’Conner drove in two runs each.

The team is 2-3 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play and next hosts North Salinas at 4 p.m. Friday, April 5.

Disc golfers throw well

Scotts Valley High School’s Scott Edwards shot a 1-under-par 53, but it was not enough to defeat San Lorenzo Valley High School in a disc golf match at Black Mouse Disc Golf Course in Felton on March 28.

For SLV, Robbie Biagiotti tied for third with a 56, and Kjell Johnson and Jordan Peabody finished with 61s to give the Cougars the win.

The next match for all the teams is April 14 at Aptos High School — the fifth of the season.

The league finals are at Shaffer Park in Santa Cruz on May 5.
