Three local plays will take place this weekend in the valleys. Students from San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley high schools, as well as youth from around the county will perform on stage.

Comedy opens at SLV High School

A student-directed drama production of “Dialogues of the Gods” will open Thursday, May 2, at the San Lorenzo Valley High School Performing Arts Center, 7105 Highway 9, in Felton.

Originally written by Lucian of Samosata more than 2,000 years ago, a new version of “Dialogues” mocks the Homeric concept of the Greek gods. The play includes romance, gossip and betrayals in a modernized twist on Greek mythology.

The show will be performed at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, May 2 to 11. Sunday matinees will begin at 2 p.m. May 5 and 12.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, with discounted rates of $8 for students, senior citizens and school staff members. Students with an ASB sticker pay $7.

All tickets are $7 on Community Night, May 9.

‘Jungle Book’ to open in Santa Cruz

A production of “The Jungle Book” performed by Christian Youth Theater Santa Cruz will open May 4, a Saturday, at Louden Nelson Center, 301 Center St., in Santa Cruz.

The play follows Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale of a young boy, Mowgli, raised in the jungles of India by a pack of wolves.

In scenes that are comedic, romantic and touching, Mowgli learns that home is not so much a location as being with the ones you love.

The show will be performed by students 4 to 18-years-old at 3 o’clock Saturday and Sunday afternoons and at 7 o’clock Friday and Saturday nights, May 4 through 12.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students, $12 for children and seniors, and $18 at the door. Group pricing is $12 per ticket with a 10 ticket minimum in advance.

The musical is billed as a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea” with humorous twists. Melodic and romantic songs intertwine with a story of royal courtship and comedy.

Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 26 through May 4. Sunday matinees begin at noon April 28 and at 2 p.m. May 5, the final show of the run.
