A photo by Boulder Creek resident and military mother Kim Monack was named Photo of the Year by the United States Army. The photo is of her one-year-old grandson Edmund Monack while he stands in front of an etching of the Soldiers Creed in Cupertino.
Monack shot the photo in October 2012 when she and her grandson, visited the Cupertino Veterans Memorial Park for the first time. Monack posted the photo to her Facebook page and it went viral through friends and military organizations. Monack is a member of Blue Star Moms in Santa Cruz County.

Monack’s photo was entered into the running for photo of the year and received the top number of votes to win the recognition.
Upon the achievement, Monack was invited by the Cupertino City Council to give a presentation about her photo.
“Many might see a little boy standing before a wall of words, but for me I see my grandson, Eddy, standing before the Soldiers Creed,” said Monack, at her presentation to the Cupertino City Council on May 21. “That creed has been recited by all three of my children.”
