Three 19-year-old Oakland women were arrested in Scotts Valley Monday afternoon and are being held in the Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of committing a string of thefts from stores throughout the North County area.

Scotts Valley Police Sgt. Justin Milroy said that the department had gotten a rash of reports of large quantities of consumer itemsbeing stolen over the past several weeks.

“Stores were noticing large amounts being taken,” he said, adding that it was fairly common to see an area be targeted by traveling burglary rings that steal massive quantities of high-end consumer goods, such as baby formula, and shaving accessories.

Milroy said that, using surveillance footage, the department was able to identify the three women — Briana Mitchell, Tamia Spates, and Markeyah Zinn — as suspects, as well as their vehicle, and post fliers at local merchants asking employees to be on the lookout.

“We developed some suspect information, and we said 'If you see them, call us,'” he said.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Monday, staff at Walgreens reported seeing the trio to the police.

The women were contacted and were arrested after a search of their vehicle revealed large amounts of baby formula and other stolen items.
