Stand-up comic and Felton native Ian Harris is returning to his roots this month as he celebrates the premiere of his first hour-long comedy special with a live performance in Santa Cruz.

Harris, a 1989 graduate of San Lorenzo Valley High School, said that he plans to kick off his newest comedy routine “Critical and Thinking” at the Rio Theater on Saturday, July 26 — when he will be in his hometown for his 25th high school reunion.

“The theme of my show is critical thinking,” he said. “My whole act — people call it science-based comedy.”

Harris, who describes himself as a skeptic, said that his act explores people's beliefs — whether that is religion, medicine, or even Sasquatch.

“I talk a lot about religion, beliefs, and things that we take religiously,” he said. “We all believe in something that’s wacky to someone else. No belief is safe — including my own.”

A veteran comic, Harris recalled the first time he was set to perform onstage as a 21-year-old at an open-mic night at the Holy City Zoo comedy club in San Francisco.

Several well-known comics were set to perform that night, he said, and he was starstruck.

“I just completely freaked out and walked away,” Harris said.

It was just a few weeks later, he said, that he found himself in Los Angeles performing in a comedy showcase at the Ice House comedy club in Pasadena.

Since then, he said, he has worked in comedy for nearly two decades before starting to do it full-time in 2011.

“I get compared a bit to George Carlin,” he said, “but I don’t get foul and dirty.”

His televised comedy special, an hour-long stand-up routine, is set to premiere on Tuesday, Aug. 12 on Video On Demand, as well as iTunes and other online services.

After two months, Harris said, then his distributor will work on making the special available on subscription-based services like Netflix and Hulu.

“The distributor didn’t go with a cable company,” he said. “They’re doing the pay-per-view first then they'll explore their options.”

Harris said that, as a Santa Cruz County native, kicking off his live performance tour in Santa Cruz was special to him.

“I was born and raised there, I went to Quail Hollow (Elementary School), graduated from SLV,” he said.

Moving forward, Harris said, he is currently working on developing an episodic television series based on his stand-up routine, as well as a show called “Supernormal Activity” — which he described as a “Reno 911!”-esque spoof of ghost-hunter shows.
