We asked Lt. John Hohmann, veteran Scotts Valley motorcycle officer, to take a half-hour spin on the Zero S electric motorcycle. Wearing his leather jacket and shades, Hohmann rode the bike on the highway, on some curves and idled through mild traffic in Scotts Valley.

Acceleration: The Zero S has immediate acceleration from zero to a top speed of 60 mph. “It does not lack the speed,” Hohmann said. “The get-up and go is fantastic.”

Balance: Hohmann likes the balance and weight distribution. “I can come to a complete stop without putting my feet down,” he said.

Weight: At 225 pounds, the bike is stable on the road and quick off the line.

Shifting: None. The S is a clutchless one-speed.

Cargo: Optional hard-shell saddlebags are big enough to carry a laptop or a few groceries.

Comparison: Hohmann said he has never ridden a bike in the same class.

Best use: “It would be great for a local commuter,” Hohmann said. “It’s very light, it handles great and it’s very well balanced.”

Hiccup: With a light movement, the motorcycle accelerates, and it’s not easy to find a cruising speed like on a police motorcycle.

Plug it in: The Zero S can make 60 miles on a single charge, and fully drained, the lithium-ion battery takes four hours to fill. The standard plug fits in any wall outlet.

Price: The S is less than $10,000 and costs less than 1 cent per mile to operate.

Overall assessment: After getting off the bike, Hohmann wanted to take it for a day-long demo. “I think they’re going to be a hit,” he said.
